Black Country Foodbank Closure Hits Vulnerable Residents Hard
Black Country Foodbank Closure Hits Vulnerable

A vital Black Country foodbank that provided a lifeline to people in crisis has announced its closure due to financial losses. The Smethwick Church Action Network, which operated from Holy Trinity Church in Sandwell, will shut at the end of May, leaving thousands of vulnerable residents without a key source of emergency food.

Financial Struggles Lead to Closure

Reverend Nick Ross, a trustee of the project, confirmed that the foodbank was running at a significant year-on-year loss. He stated that any continuation would make it impossible for the trustees to fulfil their duties towards staff and under Charity Commission rules. The foodbank, supported by the Trussell Trust, opened in 2011 and distributed 12,519 food parcels in 2025 alone.

Impact on the Community

The closure is a heavy blow to clients and referral agencies. The foodbank provided three days of nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people referred in crisis. Current users will be directed to alternative foodbanks, but the trustees acknowledged the difficulty this transition will cause.

Official Statement

In a statement, the trustees said: "At a meeting on 28th April 2026, we made the decision that the foodbank has to close. The last day of opening for clients will be 29th May. This decision was reached with huge regret, but a recognition that our financial situation left us with no viable alternative."

They added: "We recognise that this will be a blow to clients and to referral agencies and other partners seeking to help them. We will do our best to signpost towards alternative food banks both directly with clients during the remaining sessions and through our partners. As I am sure you will, we will do your best to ensure that this difficult process goes as smoothly as possible."

Looking Ahead

The trustees emphasised their commitment to supporting users during the transition. The closure highlights the ongoing challenges faced by charitable organisations in maintaining services amid rising costs and demand.
