FCDO Issues Urgent Travel Warning for British Nationals in Bolivia
FCDO Warns British Nationals of Bolivia Strike

The Foreign Office has issued an urgent travel update for British tourists in Bolivia, a South American holiday hotspot. The FCDO has shared new information on contact numbers for consular services in Bolivia.

Indefinite Strike Announced

The interprovincial transport union of La Paz announced an indefinite strike that began on 6 May 2026. The FCDO states: "If a bus company sells you a ticket 'condicionado' it means they will not guarantee arrival to your destination." Travelers are advised to check local advice before traveling and not to cross blockades.

Affected Routes

The following routes should be avoided until further notice:

Advice Against Travel

The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the Chapare region of Cochabamba Department, including Villa Tunari and highway routes 4 and 24 that pass through Chapare.

Tourism Recovery

Bolivia's tourism industry is recovering post-pandemic, with foreign visitor arrivals reaching over 1.6 million in 2025, up from 1.4 million in 2024, exceeding previous highs.

Visa Information

UK nationals can stay for up to 30 days, extendable to a total of 90 days without a visa, according to the FCDO.
