Residents of Great Barr are calling for action on the former Buffet Island building, described as a huge 'embarrassing eyesore' on Queslett Road. Councillor Adrian Andrew (Pheasey Park Farm) has revealed he approached housing associations to consider developing the site, which has been boarded up since its closure years ago. An application to open a McDonald's drive-thru was rejected last April.
Councillor's Efforts
Councillor Andrew stated he supported residents who opposed the McDonald's plan and is now encouraging housing associations to build sheltered accommodation for elderly people. He said: 'We are really hoping that negotiations are taking place with the landowner to sell the land, but these are commercially confidential. I've encouraged a couple of housing associations to build sheltered accommodation. I would encourage the owner to work with them so we can get a development that everyone can support.'
Resident Frustrations
Dozens of comments on Facebook expressed frustration over the building's state. One resident said: 'First thing you see as you enter the estate from the Birmingham side, absolute embarrassment. It epitomises the decline of the estate in recent years.' Another added: 'It looks just as good as the roads .... crap and crumbling .... they either need to knock it all down or convert it.' Some suggested alternatives like a Wetherspoons pub, while others lamented the lost McDonald's opportunity despite traffic concerns.
McDonald's Rejection
McDonald's proposals for Buffet Island were first put forward in 2023 but faced fierce opposition from residents, councillors, and MP Wendy Morton. The fast food chain claimed the branch would create 120 jobs, but councillors argued it would cause traffic chaos, given its proximity to three schools, as well as litter, biodiversity, and light pollution issues. McDonald's eventually abandoned the plans.
Councillor Andrew confirmed he has nothing concrete to report yet, as the matter rests with the landowner. He remains hopeful for a positive development that will address the eyesore and benefit the community.
