Hedyn Housing Association Announces New Central Newport Headquarters
Housing association Hedyn has officially confirmed plans to establish a new headquarters in the heart of Newport, creating a centralised workplace for its 750 employees. The organisation, which was formed last year through the merger of social landlords Melin and Newport City Homes, has acquired the substantial 54,000 square foot former Royal Mail building located on Mill Street.
Relocation and Regeneration Timeline
Staff will be relocated from existing offices in Newport and Pontypool to the new headquarters, which consists of two adjoining buildings. Fitout work is scheduled to commence shortly, with the site expected to be ready for occupancy by the summer of 2028. This strategic move represents a significant investment in Newport's commercial property market and underscores the vital role housing associations can play in urban regeneration efforts.
Executive Vision and Community Commitment
Paula Kennedy, chief executive of Hedyn, expressed enthusiasm about the new headquarters, stating: "At Hedyn, we know how important home is in creating a sense of belonging and safety. We want the same thing for our colleagues which is why I'm so pleased to announce Hedyn's new home." She emphasised that as a larger organisation post-merger, balancing community presence with functional office spaces is crucial.
Kennedy added: "The move to the former Royal Mail building will help more of our colleagues work side by side meaning a more seamless service for our residents. Though our HQ will remain in Newport – albeit in a new location – we will continue to strengthen our presence in the other local authority areas we serve." The association is committed to investing in the local community and anticipates that increased footfall will provide a knock-on boost for nearby shops and cafes.
Broader Context and Portfolio
This development follows similar initiatives by other housing associations, such as Valleys to Coast, which recently revealed plans to transform a prime office building in Bridgend into its headquarters alongside new apartments and commercial units. Hedyn manages a portfolio of 15,000 social homes across multiple local authorities, including Blaenau Gwent, Monmouthshire, Newport, Powys, and Torfaen.
The acquisition value of the new headquarters building has not been disclosed. Previously, the property was owned by property development firm Garrison Barclays Estates, which acquired the empty building from engineering firm Industrial Automation and Control approximately a decade ago and revamped the exterior to attract new tenants.
