Historic Tamworth Hotel Transformed into Supported Living Apartments
Proposals to convert a former hotel in Tamworth town centre into supported living apartments have received unanimous backing from the planning committee. The scheme will transform the 18th-century Brewery House on Ladybank into 10 self-contained flats specifically designed for adults with severe learning difficulties and brain injuries.
Planning Approval and Building Modifications
The planning committee gave the green light to the conversion into 10 self-contained flats alongside a single side extension. Minor external modifications are proposed to enable the change, though significant internal work will be required to transform the existing 19 ensuite rooms into the new apartment configuration.
According to a heritage statement submitted by the applicant, the significance of the heritage asset, which overlooks Tamworth Castle, would remain unaffected by these changes. No statutory consultees raised objections to the proposal, although Tamworth Castle Bowling Club requested that a door opening onto the bowling club grounds should serve solely as a fire exit.
Historical Significance and Future Use
Brewery House dates back to 1750 and originally served as a workhouse, later functioning as an annex providing accommodation for The Castle Hotel, before being utilised more recently for social housing. The planning committee imposed a condition ensuring the door to the bowling club would stay locked except for emergency use.
Councillor Martin Summers put forward the motion for councillors to approve the application. He commented: "I think it's a great idea. It keeps it in use, hopefully it will be tidied up as well. It's a great cause it is going towards, helping people live within the town centre and semi-independently. So it's a great use for the building."
The conversion represents a significant step in providing appropriate housing for vulnerable adults within the community while preserving an important historical structure. The project will enable residents to live semi-independently in the heart of Tamworth town centre, with the building's historical character maintained throughout the transformation process.
