A group of travellers has set up an illegal encampment at Muntz Park in Selly Oak, Birmingham, causing dismay among local residents. On Tuesday, May 26, a number of caravans, motorhomes, and other vehicles were observed parked on the grass at the five-acre park, which is located off Umberslade Road and was once part of a working farm.
The exact time of the group's arrival remains unclear. This incident follows a similar occurrence at Shard End Country Park, where an assortment of caravans and vehicles, some bearing business logos, arrived just before the Bank Holiday weekend.
Council Response to Unauthorised Encampments
Birmingham City Council has previously stated its commitment to actively protecting its land and taking steps to recover it when unauthorised encampments occur. The council has designated transit sites and plots for use by the Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller community, in line with government policy. Details of the Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment, updated in 2019, are available on the council's website.
Local residents have expressed frustration over the encampment, with some noting the recurring nature of such incidents in the area. The council is expected to take action to remove the group and restore the park for public use.
