Historic Willenhall Social Club Set for Transformation into 12 Apartments
Plans have been formally submitted to Walsall Council to redevelop the historic former Willenhall and District Workers Social Club on Harper Street into a residential complex. The application, lodged by applicant Mr Ranjit Singh, proposes converting the building into 12 apartments, comprising 10 one-bedroom and two two-bedroom units.
Detailed Development Plans for the Corner Plot
The proposal for the large corner plot includes a single-storey side and rear extension to enhance the structure, along with the creation of 13 dedicated parking spaces to accommodate residents. This redevelopment aims to breathe new life into a site that has remained vacant since the club last closed its doors to the public in 2018.
Heritage and History of the Building
Constructed near the end of the 19th Century, the building was originally a residential townhouse. Over the years, it has undergone several transformations, first known as The Manor Club, then the Willenhall and District Workers Social Club, and most recently as Unity House. Although it is listed as a non-designated heritage asset, it is not formally listed or locally listed, allowing for potential redevelopment.
Current Condition and Regeneration Opportunity
Agent JBVJ Architects Ltd has described the building as damaged and neglected, highlighting the severe drop-off in demand for social clubs as a key factor in its decline. In their statement, the agent emphasized that Unity House presents the opportunity to bring the site back to life through regeneration, addressing the need for housing while preserving a piece of local history.
This redevelopment plan marks a significant step in repurposing a historic Black Country landmark, contributing to urban renewal and meeting housing demands in the Willenhall area.
