Four Distinguished Individuals Receive Freeman of Broxtowe Honour
In a prestigious ceremony held on January 28, Broxtowe Borough Council conferred its highest civic honour, the status of Freeman of Broxtowe, upon four remarkable individuals. This recognition celebrates decades of unwavering dedication to supporting the residents and enhancing the community across the borough.
A Lifetime of Service to Young People
Among the honourees is 82-year-old Richard Pratt, whose commitment spans over thirty years. He has made significant contributions through his involvement in scouting organisations, patient advocacy initiatives, and various other community-focused roles, profoundly impacting the lives of young people in the area.
Charity Fundraising Through Performance
Mark Preston was also admitted as a Freeman for his extraordinary fundraising efforts. Performing as his alter-ego, Miss Zandra, he has successfully raised more than £520,000 for local charities based in Eastwood and the surrounding communities, demonstrating creativity and generosity in supporting vital causes.
Promoting Local Heritage and Culture
Dr Peter Robinson received the honour in recognition of his dedicated work with the Beeston District and Civic Society. His efforts have been instrumental in raising awareness of Beeston's historical significance and cultural landscape, making local heritage accessible to a broader audience and preserving the area's unique character.
Strategic Leadership and Community Impact
The final recipient is Ruth Hyde OBE, the former chief executive of Broxtowe Borough Council, who retired in September. She was awarded for her strategic yet compassionate leadership across numerous county-wide and district-level groups. Her contributions have helped shape the local area through:
- Major regeneration and funding initiatives to boost economic growth
- Strategic planning and housing developments
- Championing community safety and social cohesion
This collective recognition underscores the vital role that dedicated individuals play in fostering a strong, supportive, and vibrant community throughout Broxtowe, including areas like Beeston, Eastwood, Kimberley, and Stapleford.
