Rochdale Mayor's 2026 Diary: Business Visits and Charity Work

Mayor's New Year Reflections: Celebrating Rochdale's Pioneering Spirit

As we step into 2026, I extend my warmest wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year to all residents of our borough. The beginning of this year marks the final third of my mayoral term, and my diary remains packed with engagements that showcase the very best of Rochdale. While much has been accomplished, there is still significant work ahead to continue building a vibrant and thriving community.

Spotlight on Local Business Excellence

One of the greatest strengths of our borough is the abundance of high-quality local businesses that embody Rochdale's pioneering heritage. Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting two outstanding companies that exemplify this spirit: Hanson Springs Limited and NEMA Ltd.

Hanson Springs, established in 1963, stands as a world leader in spring and valve spring technology. During my visit, I met with Malcolm, John, and Lisa, alongside long-serving employees, apprentices, and even the founder's family across generations. This company supplies critical components to diverse sectors including oil and gas, nuclear power generation, and railway industries. It was inspiring to see a local firm that not only excels globally but also enriches our social and economic fabric. With plans for further investment, Hanson Springs is poised for continued growth. I extend my heartfelt thanks for their generous donation to my charities.

My visit to NEMA Ltd was equally rewarding, particularly due to their exceptional apprenticeship programme. Approximately ten percent of their workforce are apprentices, ensuring that local talent drives the company's future success. I learned about their collaboration with Rochdale Training to develop skills and was moved by conversations with apprentices about their journeys into electrical and mechanical engineering. The company's innovative projects, such as active magnetic bearing development, and their robust order book highlight their leadership in the field. This visit evoked fond memories of my school science classes and reinforced the importance of nurturing homegrown expertise.

Community Engagement and Charitable Initiatives

Beyond business, I was honoured to attend the Royal British Legion county conference, where Middleton veteran Ted Woolley delivered opening remarks. This event allowed us to showcase Rochdale's comprehensive support for veterans, including the pioneering Breakfast Club, flag-raising services, and various advisory programmes.

Another poignant engagement was visiting the photography exhibition at Number One Riverside, commemorating 25 years since NATO's KFOR mission in Kosovo. The exhibition powerfully conveyed human stories from the conflict, reminding us of the daily sacrifices made by armed forces to maintain peace. It served as a solemn reminder that not all conflicts are global wars, yet their impact is profound.

School visits are always a delight, and my afternoon at St Johns CE Thornham Primary School in Middleton was particularly memorable. The staff and pupils offered a warm welcome, and I was impressed by their insightful questions about the mayor's role. Congratulations to the school on receiving an In Bloom award for their outstanding efforts.

Fundraising Successes and Future Plans

The mayor's annual quiz book continues to be a highlight, with over a thousand copies sold this year, raising vital funds for charitable causes. My sincere thanks to Ken Smith for crafting another thought-provoking set of questions.

I also enjoyed a visit to the East Lancashire Railway's Inspiration Train, an exhibition celebrating the past, present, and future of UK rail travel. This event highlighted the transformative role of railways and celebrated a new partnership between Network Rail and ELR.

Lastly, I wish to express my personal gratitude to my dedicated charities and the Mayor's Charity Committee for their unwavering support. Throughout the year, we raise funds for Springhill Hospice, Jolly Josh, Awakening Minds, Papyrus, Women's Housing Action Group, and the Johnny Alfrey Musical Memorial. These organisations perform incredible work, supported by dedicated staff and volunteers.
