A 'hidden gem' walk filled with spooky rock formations, a stunning café, and woodland is less than one hour from Birmingham. As the weather warms and sunny days become more frequent, families and friends are seeking new outdoor destinations that offer entertainment for all ages.
Discover Nanny's Rock on Kinver Edge
One keen walker, who posts as @twoforthetrek on TikTok, shared a location he believes is a 'hidden gem' in an unexpected place. Nanny's Rock on Kinver Edge, owned by the National Trust, features several free areas to explore alongside rock houses carved from soft red sandstone. These formations include spooky faces that intrigue visitors.
The most famous rock houses are at Holy Austin Rock, now restored and open to visitors for a fee. They feature stoves, furniture, windows, and doors set into the sandstone, preserving the original living conditions. However, for a free day out, the surrounding area offers plenty of exploration opportunities.
Walking Route and Highlights
The walker described following the purple circular route, which takes about two hours and winds through woodlands, rock formations, and past the National Trust rock houses. He noted: 'You probably wouldn't expect it, but the West Midlands has more hidden gems than you think. This is Nanny's Rock in Kinver Edge.'
The area explored is completely free, along with many circular routes, though entry to the rock houses and café requires payment. Parking is easy, with numerous free spots nearby, either off-road or in designated car parks.
Visitor Reactions
Dozens of people commented on the video, thanking the walker for sharing the route. One person said: 'How have I never seen this and I walk in Kinver Edge all my life.' Another added: 'I go here pretty much once a week with my dog.' A third remarked: 'Wish I'd visited when I lived in Birmingham, silly me not knowing. Thanks for heads up. Guess I didn't have TikTok over 30 years ago.'
