Artist Chosen for Landmark Public Artwork

Nottingham-based artist Natalie Coe has been selected to create a spectacular new public artwork that will transform the city centre. Known for her vibrant abstract style, Coe will paint a massive 150-square-metre mural on Severn's House, a prominent new building in the Broad Marsh redevelopment area. The artwork will be clearly visible to passersby from Middle Pavement.

Community Ideas Shape the Design

A panel including local community representatives chose Coe for the prestigious commission. Her final design will draw directly on ideas shared by local people during a public consultation, which highlighted a strong desire for a greener, more welcoming, and people-focused city centre. Coe said: “Being chosen to create this mural is hugely exciting, an honour I don't take lightly. I've spent time with the community feedback gathered about Broadmarsh, and that history and emotion is the starting point for everything. I can't wait to create a large-scale artwork that visibly transforms this space for everyone, creating a new chapter that says: we see you, this place is loved, this place is alive and changing. Honestly, it makes my heart sing.”

Collaboration and Funding

The project is being produced by local charity City Arts (Nottingham) alongside Art Fest, with funding provided by Homes England. Suzannah Bedford, Director of City Arts (Nottingham), said: “We're delighted to be working with Natalie and Art Fest on this exciting new commission. Public art helps us feel connected to the places around us.” Jo Nugent, from Homes England, added: “The Broad Marsh site is a once in a generation chance to reshape a major part of Nottingham city centre. We are pleased to have commissioned Natalie, an exciting Nottingham artist, to design a new mural to reanimate the street scene around Severn's House.”

Future of Severn's House

Once complete, Severn’s House will host the University of Nottingham’s new 'Connect Nottingham' and 'City as Lab' facilities, while also housing the Nottingham Urban Room to give residents a space to discuss the future of the city. Professor Paul Grainge, from the University of Nottingham, praised the choice, noting that the striking artwork will bring a distinct "feeling of joy" to the bold new community space.

Public Involvement Opportunities

Members of the public who want to get involved can learn more about the history of the site and Natalie’s creative approach by attending a free workshop this Saturday, July 4, 2026. The session will take place at Nottingham Central Library, and residents can secure their free tickets by visiting the official City Arts website.
