Rossendale Ramblers Brave Icy Conditions on Winter Walks
Ramblers Conquer Icy Trails in Rossendale

The recent spell of icy weather across the region has tested the mettle of local walking enthusiasts, but the Rossendale Ramblers have been undeterred, embarking on several challenging and scenic winter expeditions.

Navigating Frosty Trails

Last Wednesday, a determined group of nine walkers set off from Sowerby Bridge for an 11-mile trek. Despite bright sunshine, a biting wind accompanied them as they traced the route of the historic Rochdale Canal. The path led them past Greetland, onto the open expanses of Norland Moor, and up to Gallows Pole Hill.

The weekend brought a larger gathering, with 27 ramblers assembling at Holcombe Village for a six-mile walk planned before a New Year meal. However, the combination of wet and treacherously icy surfaces proved too hazardous for some, leading to a number turning back. The decision was made to shorten the route for everyone's safety, but not before the group successfully visited the iconic Pilgrims’ Cross on Holcombe Moor. Afterwards, approximately 30 people enjoyed a well-earned social meal together.

Upcoming Rambles for Your Diary

The group is now looking ahead to a series of enticing winter walks. The new pub walk season launches on Saturday, January 17, with a two-hour stroll starting from Holcombe Brook. This route will explore Redisher Woods and pass the MoD firing range before concluding back at the pub, where optional refreshments and lunch will be available.

On Sunday, January 18, the action moves to the picturesque area of Arnside for an eight-mile walk. This hike promises a climb up Arnside Knott, which offers stunning panoramic views over Morecambe Bay, weather permitting. The plan is to follow the walk with lunch on the beach at nearby Silverdale.

A longer 10-mile walk is scheduled for Wednesday, January 21, beginning at Clowbridge. This challenging route will head via Water to the trig points at Broad Clough and Thieveley Pike, returning via Deerplay Moor and the Pennine Bridleway.

Join the Ramblers

All walks organised by the Rossendale Ramblers are free to attend for newcomers. The group operates a 'try before you join' policy, asking participants to become official members of The Ramblers after attending three walks. Membership costs just £3.75 per month.
