Rossendale Volunteers Prepare for Prestigious Gardening Competition
Rossendale Volunteers Ready for Gardening Competition

Volunteers from Civic Pride Rossendale are working tirelessly in the summer heat to prepare their town for a prestigious national gardening competition. With just weeks left before judges arrive, the dedicated team is transforming green spaces across Rawtenstall, Bacup, Newchurch, and Haslingden.

Preparations Underway for Judges' Visit

The official judging visit is scheduled for Monday, July 27. The project highlights how residents are embracing local regeneration while encouraging more nature in urban spaces. Organisers are urging residents to volunteer for extra gardening, weeding, and watering sessions in the coming weeks. Supporters can also contribute by litter picking or painting colourful flowers on stones to decorate the streets.

Lynn Smith, chair of Civic Pride Rossendale, and Peter Harris, maintenance officer, have been working closely with Rossendale Borough Council to coordinate the massive tidying effort. Local businesses have also stepped forward to assist with deep cleaning and extra gardening.

Aiming for Gold Again

Lynn Smith said: “We have entered this competition for a number of years and have managed to achieve the top award of Gold. We are really hoping, with everyone's amazing effort, that we can do this again. This award is very important as it brings the community together with a shared goal, which is wonderful.”

The two visiting judges will spend the morning assessing the area based on horticulture, community involvement, and environmental impact. The official tour will begin at the local railway station to view creative sculptures made by nearby schools.

Tour Route and Community Projects

The judges will then examine several community gardens, floral displays, and revitalised embankments along the main high street. The afternoon session will focus on specific neighbourhood projects, including a garden created by a local youth group.

Results Expected in Autumn

Residents will have to wait several months to find out if the town has secured another top award. The official results are expected to be announced at a regional presentation ceremony in late autumn.
