Rutland Water: The Blue Flag Beach 90 Minutes from Birmingham
Rutland Water: Blue Flag Beach Near Birmingham

Rutland Water Beach is the only inland bathing water location in England to be awarded both the Blue Flag and Seaside Award. Located just 90 minutes from Birmingham, it offers a convenient day trip for families without the hassle of long motorway journeys.

Why Rutland Water Stands Out

Unlike Weston-Super-Mare, which is a two-hour drive away and often involves busy M5 traffic, Rutland Water is a short hop up the M6 into Leicestershire. The beach features a 140-metre-long sandy beach and a clean lake ideal for swimming and paddling. The Blue Flag award guarantees excellent water quality, biodiversity, and green spaces for the community.

Entry is free, with parking charges applying. Lifeguards are on duty, and there is an adventure playground, a nature reserve, and walking and cycling routes. Visitors can bring a picnic or use the cafe for snacks and ice creams, which offers panoramic views of the lake. Barbecues are permitted as long as they are raised above the ground.

Family-Friendly Activities

For families wanting to make a full day of it, there is an aqua park with a 10-metre-long Sea Dragon inflatable—the same length as the real ichthyosaur fossil found at Rutland Water in 2021. Other attractions include a 3.5-metre slide, blast bag, monkey bars, and a diving tower. Mini golf is also available near the beach, with clubs and balls from the visitor centre.

Dogs are not allowed on the beach, but there are dog-friendly areas around the park, including lakes for walking (no swimming). Nature reserves offer peace and quiet, and visitors can look out for ospreys.

Swimming Times and Getting There

Swimming is permitted every weekend from May half term until September 20, and on weekdays from June 29. Opening times vary, so check before travelling. The address is Sykes Lane, Empingham, Leicestershire, LE15 8QL. By car, it is 78 miles from Birmingham via the M6, taking around 90 minutes. Alternatively, take a train from Birmingham New Street to Stamford Station, then a taxi. Parking costs range from £2 for an hour to £16 for more than six hours, with annual passes available.
