Oven grease is one of the most stubborn household cleaning tasks, often accumulating rapidly and resisting removal without vigorous scrubbing. While many people turn to traditional 'natural' solutions such as baking soda, dish soap, or lemon, an unexpected bathroom product has surprised even cleaning enthusiasts with its effectiveness.
Shaving Cream Method Tested
A mother and lifestyle writer, Shifrah Combiths, tested an unusual method using shaving cream and reported being amazed by the results. She stated: 'I love a good hack that'll make my life easier! That's why I just had to try shaving cream (yes, shaving cream) to spot-clean my oven. I had heard it would be a miracle worker, so I couldn't wait to see for myself. And surprise! It worked better than expected.'
How to Use Shaving Cream for Oven Cleaning
According to experts at Team Clean, the procedure is straightforward. Spray shaving foam evenly across the oven door, sides, and base until fully covered, then leave it for approximately 30 minutes to break down grease and grime. After the time has elapsed, wipe everything away with a damp cloth. Finally, heat the oven while empty to eliminate any lingering smell from the shaving cream.
Shifrah, who writes for The Kitchn, left the foam on for only 15 minutes and still observed impressive results. She explained: 'Using a plastic scraper, I wiped up the excess shaving cream - there was a lot of it! I grabbed a cleaning sponge and made a few passes over each treated area. The shaving cream itself had little visible effect on the grease-splattered areas, whether they were on the glass or on other portions of the oven door. But then I used a scrubby sponge to wipe the shaving cream covering the burned, crusty mess and I couldn't believe it: The mess slipped right off the oven's surface. The shaving cream magically penetrated the mess and softened it to the point that it let go of its hold. What a difference - with hardly any effort!'
Alternative Baking Soda Method
Another commonly recommended method comes from baking soda brand Arm & Hammer, which states that baking soda can effectively break down grease and burnt-on food due to its mildly abrasive texture. It recommends mixing half a cup of baking soda with three tablespoons of water to form a paste, spreading it over dirty areas (avoiding heating elements), and leaving it to sit for 15-20 minutes. Afterwards, wipe away the paste and loosened grime with a damp paper towel, then clean the interior again using water or a mixture of water and vinegar.
Caution with Chemical Cleaners
The brand also advises caution with traditional oven cleaners, which can contain strong chemicals such as potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, and monoethanolamine. These substances, it warns, can irritate the respiratory system and may cause burns to the skin, lungs, and eyes if not used carefully.
