Record Number of Newborns at Telford Exotic Zoo
Telford Exotic Zoo has announced a remarkable baby boom this summer, with more than 20 newborn animals arriving since June. Among the new arrivals are several rare and endangered species, drawing increased attention from visitors and conservationists alike.
Rare Species Among the New Arrivals
The zoo's collection now includes a pair of critically endangered cotton-top tamarins, a species native to Colombia. Additionally, two red panda cubs, a species listed as endangered, have been born. The zoo also welcomed three meerkat pups, four ring-tailed lemurs, and a variety of reptiles and birds.
Visitor Numbers Surge
According to zoo manager Sarah Jenkins, the baby boom has led to a 30% increase in visitor numbers compared to the same period last year. "Families are flocking to see the adorable newborns, and it's wonderful to see so many people engaging with conservation efforts," she said. The zoo has extended its opening hours and added extra keeper talks to accommodate the surge.
Conservation Success Story
The births are part of the zoo's participation in international breeding programs. "Each birth is a success for the species and a testament to our dedicated team," said head keeper Mark Thompson. The zoo has invested in new habitats and enrichment activities to support the growing animal family.
Summer Events and Activities
To celebrate, the zoo is hosting a "Baby Animal Week" from August 12-18, featuring special feeding sessions and photography opportunities. Visitors can also participate in naming competitions for some of the newborns. The zoo remains open daily from 10 am to 5 pm.
