Birmingham man returns from Thailand after catastrophic injuries

Ethan Lacey, a 20-year-old from Castle Vale, Birmingham, has finally returned to the UK after suffering catastrophic injuries in Thailand and surviving even after doctors withdrew his life support. His family launched a fundraising campaign that raised more than £27,000 to cover medical bills and bring him home.

How the accident happened

Ethan fell from a moving pickup truck at a busy Pattaya intersection on May 16. The vehicle's rear wheel reportedly went over his head, leaving him with catastrophic injuries. He was hospitalized in Thailand for over a month.

Doctors withdrew life support

After concluding that nothing more could be done, doctors withdrew Ethan's life support. However, he kept breathing on his own—a development his grandmother, Anthea Chatwin, described as "nothing short of a miracle."

Fundraising campaign

Ms. Chatwin launched a GoFundMe appeal to keep her grandson alive amid mounting medical bills and to arrange his return to the UK. The appeal raised more than £27,000.

Return to the UK

Providing a new update, Ms. Chatwin said Ethan had "finally" returned to the UK. "After everything he's been through, knowing he's now where he needs to be for the specialist treatment he deserves, means the world to us," she said. "None of this would have been possible without every single one of you. From complete strangers to life-long friends, you all came together to help save our boy. Your kindness, generosity, shares, messages and support gave us hope when we felt like we had none. We will never be able to put into words how grateful we are."

Financial burden

Ms. Chatwin said flying Ethan home had left his family around £13,000 in debt, but they would happily "carry that debt" for the rest of their lives knowing he was safe. She said the fundraiser would remain open after encouragement from "incredible people."

Long road ahead

Ethan still has a long road ahead, but his grandmother added: "Every donation, every share, every comment, every prayer and every kind message reminds us that we are not facing this battle alone. Ethan still has a long road ahead of him, but knowing we have such an incredible army behind him gives us strength to keep going."
