John Savage, 82, and his wife Frances, 80, from Essex, have revealed the secrets to a long and happy relationship after celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary with family and friends at Honey Lane Care Home in Waltham Abbey.
A romantic celebration
The couple enjoyed a romantic lunch before a special party arranged by care home staff, featuring live music, decorations, a custom cake, and a photo collage highlighting key moments from their six decades together. John moved into the home in February, and Frances visits regularly to spend quality time with him.
Family and shared history
The couple share two sons, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. They first met at a mutual friend's 21st birthday party in Tottenham and married at St Mary’s Church in Great Parndon, Harlow. Over the years, they lived in Harlow, Upminster, and Bishop’s Stortford, and also spent time working in South Africa and Botswana.
Secrets to a long marriage
Former electrician John said: “The secret to a long and happy marriage is being tolerant, having a busy life, and not being in each other's pockets all the time!” Frances added: “Being able to laugh together is very important too.” John recalled their wedding day: “Our wedding day was not without a little drama when my best man suddenly went missing and one of my other friends had to step in at the last minute.”
A memorable party
Frances said: “It truly was a wonderful celebration, there was so much love in the garden at Honey Lane, and I can’t thank Lisa and Julie enough for making it so memorable for John and I.” The 38-bedroom specialist dementia facility regularly organises private lunches for the couple so they can relax together.
