As part of National Volunteers Week, Stockport NHS Foundation Trust is celebrating the incredible contributions of its many volunteers, including the team behind the hospital's own radio station, Radio Starlion.
Radio Starlion has been entertaining patients at Stepping Hill Hospital for an impressive 49 years, entirely run by volunteers since its inception. The station was founded in 1977 by the Stockport Lions Club, the local branch of the world's largest community service organization.
With a small group of dedicated volunteers, Radio Starlion broadcasts a diverse mix of music, news, information, features, and sports to patients on the wards. The station operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, offering live programmes from the studio and a continuous stream of music and features tailored to the hospital audience.
The studio houses thousands of old records, though newer music is also accessible through digital media. Radio Starlion is the first option on the bedside Fusion entertainment system, providing patients with free listening options via headsets or speakers during their stay.
A key aspect of the station's appeal is the ward visits by volunteers, who ask patients for song requests and dedications. These requests are often played on air within 15 to 30 minutes. Alan Swallow, who has led the station for 47 of its 49 years, highlights the importance of these interactions. The station also features live commentaries on Stockport County FC matches at Edgeley Park, provided by volunteer Dave Carter.
Alan Swallow said: "A hospital radio station like ours can help create a close and personal community atmosphere. We've been the start of many patient friendships over the years. It's been a real pleasure and honour for me and my fellow volunteers to provide entertainment and comfort to patients for so long. We're looking forward to celebrating our 50th anniversary next year."
Over 250 volunteers work at Stepping Hill Hospital, supporting patients, families, visitors, and staff in various roles, including greeting and guiding visitors, helping at mealtimes, and serving in the hospital shops. Yvonne Hanson, voluntary services manager, said: "Alan and his team provide a fantastic service with Radio Starlion, as do our many other volunteers who offer vital support year-round. We're always looking for new volunteers, so please get in touch if you'd like to join us."
