Kjell Nilsson, the Swedish actor who achieved cult status for his portrayal of the fearsome Lord Humungus in the 1981 film Mad Max 2, has died at the age of 76. His representative, Chris Carbaugh, confirmed to TMZ that Nilsson passed away on Thursday in Queensland, Australia, surrounded by his family, following a four-year battle with kidney disease.
From Olympic Weightlifter to Cult Icon
Prior to his acting career, Nilsson was an elite Olympic-class weightlifter. Born in Gothenburg, Sweden, he moved to Australia in 1980 to coach Swedish athletes preparing for the Moscow Olympic Games. During this time, he met actress Kate Ferguson, whom he later married in Sweden. Ferguson encouraged him to return to Australia and pursue acting, a decision that led to his most iconic role.
Lord Humungus: A Memorable Villain
In Mad Max 2 (released in the US as The Road Warrior), Nilsson played Lord Humungus, the intimidating masked leader of a gang of marauders terrorizing the post-apocalyptic wasteland. His powerful performance established the character as one of the franchise's most iconic antagonists. Film critic Richard Corliss of Time magazine praised the performance, writing that "malevolence courses through his huge pectorals, pulses visibly under his bald, sutured scalp."
Other Roles and Legacy
Nilsson also appeared in The Pirate Movie (1982) alongside Christopher Atkins and Kristy McNichol, the 1984 TV movie Man of Letters, and The Edge of Power (1987). Despite these roles, Lord Humungus remained dearest to fans. His representative, Chris Carbaugh, described Nilsson as "a wonderful person" who motivated many through his weight-training coaching. Carbaugh noted that the actor "loved the Mad Max fans and embraced the role" that brought him fame. Nilsson's depiction of the masked wasteland tyrant has endured for over four decades, with fans continuing to honor the character at conventions and screenings worldwide.
