A Decade of Grief: Mother Says Tragedy Feels 'Like Yesterday'

A mother who lost five members of her family in a devastating accident ten years ago has shared that the tragedy still feels as raw as if it happened yesterday. Louise James lost her partner Sean McGrotty, their sons Mark, 12, and Evan, eight, her mother Ruth, and her 14-year-old sister Jodie when their SUV slid off a slipway and sank into Lough Swilly in March 2016.

The Sole Survivor: A Baby's Miraculous Rescue

The only survivor was Louise and Sean's four-month-old daughter, Rioghnach-Ann. In a heroic act moments before the vehicle sank, Sean handed his baby daughter through the broken driver's side window to former footballer Davitt Walsh, who had swum out into the harbour in a desperate attempt to save all six occupants.

Community Comes Together for Memorial Walk

Approaching the ten-year anniversary of the tragedy, hundreds of people attended a memorial walk in Buncrana, County Donegal, wearing red and white in tribute. Before setting off, a minute's silence was observed, and a family friend sang "Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher and Higher." Louise expressed being "overwhelmed" by the support and love from the community.

She said, "Very overwhelmed. It was a fantastic success, it was amazing, the sun came out it was beautiful. Very, very, very overwhelmed." Louise added that the event went exactly as she hoped, with "laughter and fun and everyone smiling and remembering them, that's what I wanted."

Details of the Tragic Accident

It is understood the vehicle lost grip on a thick blanket of algae coating the slipway and slid into the waters. There were no warning signs at the slipway about the dangers of slipping, and a gate designed to control crowds using a summer ferry service at the popular tourist spot was left open. The slipway was used by people watching the sunset, despite dangers highlighted during the inquest in 2017.

Remembering Through Rituals

Louise revealed that she and Rioghnach frequently visit the pier to remember their family. "We come down and we'll do the walk. This is the walk along the shoreline, so it's beautiful, you know, it's a very peaceful walk and Rioghnach will play in the play park, so it's really nice where her brothers played as well."

Reflecting on the passage of time, Louise said, "Still feels like it was only yesterday so it's very overwhelming but a sadness too."

Supporting a Cause and Honoring Memories

Donations from the walk were collected for the RNLI, with the event finishing at the Lough Swilly RNLI lifeboat station. Louise noted it was "lovely" to see people from Derry, Donegal, and across Ireland pulling together. "But not just Derry and Donegal it was the whole of Ireland, because there was people here from Cork and Wicklow, and so lovely to see them all and just to be here supporting us in what we wanted to do."

The mother added, "It was great just to support the RNLI and the good work that they really do. And this is all for them, too."

A Prayer for Healing and Remembrance

Before the walk, those gathered heard a prayer: "We pray for all who grieve, for every broken heart in the community that still remembers. Help us to stand together in compassion, to support one another, to support one another and to never forget the precious lives that were lost. May we honour them and how we live with kindness, with care and love for one another, may their memory always be a blessing."
