Rescue dog Danny finds forever home after 550 days at Battersea
Rescue dog Danny finds forever home after 550 days

A rescue dog who spent hundreds of days waiting for a new family has finally found his forever home. The five-year-old Greyhound, named Danny, became one of the longest stays at leading animal charity Battersea Dogs & Cats Home after being repeatedly overlooked by potential owners. He spent 15 times longer at the rescue centre than most other dogs, who usually stay for an average of 38 days.

Staff went above and beyond for Danny

Staff did everything they could to make him feel special, including throwing him birthday parties and hosting a Valentine's Day themed photoshoot. Experts believe misconceptions about Greyhounds' energy levels and exercise needs often deter people from adopting them.

Overcoming his fears

As an ex-racing dog, Danny found aspects of the outside world quite frightening when he first arrived at the centre. To help him get used to living in a house, he spent some time in a foster home where he discovered a love of garden running, quiet nature walks and paddling in streams. His confidence grew during this time and he slowly learned that the world was not quite as scary as he once thought.

After more than 16 months in the charity's care, he now spends his time exploring his new garden, taking naps and watching his new family.

New owner's heartfelt words

Danny's new owner said: "I first saw Danny on Battersea’s Instagram in a post about him not being rehomed for 550 days and I felt an instant connection with him. From the moment we met him, there was something incredibly special about him and we just knew that we would be his forever family. Despite spending such a long time waiting for a home, he has settled far more quickly than we ever expected. In just a few days, Danny has shown us what a gentle, affectionate and sweet-natured boy he is. Watching him relax, sleep deeply and grow in confidence each day has been incredibly rewarding. We are so grateful to everyone at Battersea who cared for Danny during his time there. It is clear how much he was loved by the staff and volunteers. We feel very lucky to have found him, and we hope that his story encourages others to consider giving a rescue dog a chance. Danny has already brought so much joy to our home, and we cannot imagine life without him."

A happy ending

The dedicated team who looked after Danny were thrilled to see him leave for his new life after such a long wait. They hope his story will encourage more people to look past common myths about his breed. Zenya Green, rehoming team leader at Battersea Old Windsor, said: "Danny spent an exceptionally long time in our care, but he never stopped showing us what a gentle, loving dog he truly is. Greyhounds like Danny are so often misunderstood, and it was heartbreaking to see such a sweet boy overlooked time and time again. Our team celebrated every milestone with him – from birthdays to Valentine’s Day - to make him feel special while he waited for his new family. Watching him head off to his forever home after more than 500 days with us was incredibly special and the true happy ending we were all hoping for."
