Strictly star's emotional tribute to late mother

Strictly Come Dancing star Balvinder Sopal moved viewers to tears during Saturday night's show as she opened up about the devastating loss of her mother in an emotional tribute.

A Heartbreaking Revelation

The EastEnders actress became visibly emotional while discussing what she described as a 'terrible year' following the death of her mother, Nirmal Sopal, whom she called her 'biggest cheerleader'. The poignant moment occurred ahead of her couple's choice performance, which featured a vibrant bhangra Bollywood piece dedicated to her mother's memory.

Balvinder revealed the profound impact of her loss, stating: "Last year was a terrible year for us. Losing my mum felt like, and still does, feel like I've lost a part of me." She shared touching details about their close relationship, recalling how she cherished coming home from work to share a cup of tea with her mother, wrapped in blankets together.

Finding Strength Through Grief

The actress confessed that since the tragedy in February 2024, she had withdrawn from public life, turning down every opportunity that came her way. However, when Strictly Come Dancing approached her, she saw it as a chance to honour her mother's memory. "This is my yes year and I'm going to do it because I want to be seen, because my mum would want me to be seen," she explained emotionally.

Balvinder expressed her belief that her mother would be "incredibly happy and dancing wherever she is" watching her Strictly journey. Her decision to participate in the competition became a powerful tribute to the woman who had always been her strongest supporter.

A Mother's Lasting Legacy

Following her mother's passing on 27th February 2024 at 11:30pm, Balvinder shared an extensive tribute on Instagram, painting a picture of an extraordinary woman. Her mother passed peacefully with dignity and grace, surrounded by her daughters who were holding her hands.

Nirmal Sopal, born on 13th July 1951, was remembered for her huge warm smile and her remarkable life story. She held both a BA and MA in Fine Arts but worked from home doing piecework on a sewing machine while raising her four children. Later, she worked for bespoke shirt factory Rayner & Sturgess, creating garments for notable figures including Ray Winstone and members of the Royal family.

Balvinder described her mother as "our rock, friend, confidant, guiding light" and her number one fan, who would travel up and down the country with her father to watch her performances. She emphasised that love was her mother's ultimate legacy, concluding: "We are the lucky ones. Rest well. Thank U, Mum."
