Police in Alabama are investigating the deaths of a well-known television sports reporter and her husband, discovered at their family home in what authorities believe was a murder-suicide.
Tragic Discovery at Family Home
Christina Chambers, a sports reporter for WBRC, and her husband Johnny Rimes were found unresponsive with gunshot wounds by a family member at their residence in Hoover on Tuesday morning. Officers and medics were called to the property at 9am, where both individuals were pronounced deceased.
The Hoover Police Department stated that while the investigation remains in its early stages, evidence suggests the deaths resulted from a murder-suicide. Authorities confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public related to this tragic case.
Lives and Careers Cut Short
Christina Chambers, who married Johnny Rimes in 2021, was a beloved figure in local broadcasting. She had been part of the WBRC news team, a Fox News affiliate, since November 2015. Her journalism focused extensively on university-level sports and local high school football across Alabama and Georgia.
Following her marriage, Chambers transitioned to a career in education, teaching television and film studies at a local high school while continuing occasional freelance reporting work. The couple leave behind a three-year-old son, who was unharmed during the incident.
Johnny Rimes had worked as a financial analyst at the American Cast Iron Pipe Company for nearly 14 years, according to his professional profile.
Heartfelt Tributes from Colleagues and Community
WBRC issued a moving statement expressing profound grief over the loss of their former colleague. The broadcaster described Chambers as a valued and beloved member of the newsroom whose warmth, humour, and passion for sports left a lasting impact.
"Christina was an accomplished journalist and athlete who brought energy, professionalism, and genuine care to her work," the statement read. It highlighted her pride in her connections to the University of Alabama Birmingham, high school sports, and the wider community.
During a news bulletin, colleagues paid on-air tributes, with one former co-worker poignantly remarking, "Knowing Christina was knowing joy."
The Hoover Police Department's investigation into the precise circumstances surrounding the couple's deaths remains active.
