Vodafone's Free Calls for UK Soldiers Abroad Ahead of Remembrance Day
Vodafone offers free calls for British soldiers overseas

In a significant move ahead of Remembrance Day, Vodafone has announced it will provide free phone calls for British military personnel stationed overseas, allowing them to connect with loved ones without cost.

Connecting Families and Boosting Morale

The telecoms giant revealed that this groundbreaking change will come into effect on Tuesday, November 11. This initiative is designed to support the emotional wellbeing of service members by removing the financial barrier of international roaming charges.

Among the first to benefit is James Connolly, a 25-year-old Royal Navy technician from Plymouth. He shared his personal experience, stating, "I pay £2 per day for roaming charges in most European destinations. This can become very expensive if I'm away for three weeks at a time."

The Real Cost of Staying Connected

Connolly highlighted the extreme costs soldiers often face, revealing the most I had to pay was £60 a month just for mobile data in Norway. He described the emotional toll of being disconnected, particularly during a six-week detachment on an aircraft carrier last year when his family was unable to reach him to share news about his grandmother's illness.

"Nobody wants to receive bad news while they're on exercise - especially through a delayed text - but sometimes this is the only viable way of staying informed," Connolly reflected. "It's a moment that I still think about."

Vodafone's Commitment to Armed Forces

Steve Knibbs, Director of Vodafone Business Security Enhanced (VBSE), emphasised the company's dedication to supporting armed forces personnel. "We at Vodafone know what a magnificent job the men and women of our armed forces do for this country and the sacrifices they make on our behalf," he stated.

Knibbs added that Vodafone's research underscores how essential it is for service personnel to stay connected with their families - not just for morale, but for their emotional wellbeing as well. The timing of this announcement, just before Remembrance Day, makes the gesture particularly meaningful for those serving abroad.
