Asda Introduces Weekly Cafe Discount for Senior Shoppers
Customers aged 60 and over are being encouraged to take advantage of a new weekly discount at Asda's in-store cafes. The supermarket is offering a 10% reduction on all cafe purchases every Wednesday, providing a small but regular saving for older shoppers facing ongoing pressure on household budgets.
How the Discount Works
The offer is available at participating Asda locations and applies to the full cafe menu. This includes cooked breakfasts, sandwiches, snacks, cakes, and hot drinks. To receive the discount, eligible customers simply need to visit an Asda cafe on a Wednesday and inform a staff member at the till that they are aged 60 or over. The reduction is then applied at checkout.
Important note: The discount is limited to cafe purchases only and does not apply to grocery shopping in store. However, it provides older customers with a weekly opportunity to enjoy reduced-price meals at a time when food prices remain elevated.
Context of Rising Grocery Costs
The move comes amid ongoing concerns about grocery inflation, which currently stands at 4.3%. Analysts have warned that this figure could rise further due to continued global economic uncertainty, including the impact of conflict in the Middle East on supply chains and energy costs.
According to Worldpanel by Numerator, every 1% increase in inflation could add more than £50 a year to the average household's supermarket bill. This has prompted many shoppers to look for ways to cut costs by switching brands or shopping around.
Fraser McKevitt, head of retail and consumer insight at Worldpanel, said financial pressure was already influencing shopping behavior. "Shoppers will look to lessen the impact on their baskets when faced with rising prices," he explained. "While there remains a level of uncertainty, we are watching the data closely for behavioral changes like trading down and switching, which often emerge during periods of economic pressure."
Building on Previous Support Initiatives
The cafe discount follows Asda's previous winter support scheme, which ran from November to February and offered over-60s soup, a roll and unlimited tea and coffee for £1. That initiative was designed to provide affordable meals and a warm social space for older customers during colder months.
Although that scheme has now ended, the new Wednesday discount continues to offer savings for older shoppers as living costs remain elevated. Susannah Streeter, chief investment strategist at Wealth Club, said food prices were likely to come under further pressure in the months ahead.
"Shoppers are bracing for food costs to march higher again as the war in Iran increases supply chain costs," Streeter noted. "Grocery price inflation was stuck stubbornly at 4.3 per cent in March and is set to spiral upwards in the months to come. It's like a cruel April fools prank unfolding for shoppers, who are once again having to get used to a cost of living crisis."
She added that with almost two thirds of shoppers super-wary about rising prices, many consumers will likely start shopping around more aggressively and trade down from big brands to cheaper alternatives. "Already that trend has been rising, with discount grocer Lidl increasing its market share by 0.5 percentage points," Streeter observed.
"As more households look at ways of saving, spending on discretionary items like homewares and fashion are likely to take a hit, so the supermarkets with such ranges may see a sales squeeze," she concluded.
