Residents of Leicester aged 55 and over are being offered a chance to spice up their routine with a free and fun Salsa dance taster session next month.
Shake Up Your Tuesday Afternoon
The one-hour introductory class will take place at Age UK, Clarence House on Humberstone Drive on Tuesday, February 3, starting at 3:10pm. Following the dancing, attendees can enjoy light refreshments and a social mingling session. The event is completely free of charge.
Local dance expert Ginnette Brookes, who founded GB Dance, will guide participants through the basic steps of Salsa with easy-to-follow moves suitable for beginners. Those planning to attend are advised to wear comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear, and to bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated.
Part of a Broader Wellbeing Initiative
This lively session is part of the 'First Time for Everything' programme, a community health and wellbeing project run by the Royal Voluntary Service. The initiative receives funding from the players of the People's Postcode Lottery.
The programme specifically aims to encourage people, particularly older adults or those with limited mobility, to try new activities, remain physically active, and build social connections within their local area.
Laura Chow, Head of Charities at People's Postcode Lottery, emphasised the importance of such community events. "Being active, getting out and about and feeling part of the local community are vital for health and wellbeing, regardless of age, ability or circumstances," she said. "Thanks to our players' support, 'First Time for Everything' brings people together to try something new, meet others and have fun."
How to Secure Your Place
Places for the Salsa class are limited, so advance booking is strongly recommended. To register or for further details, contact Mary Cufflin, the Royal Voluntary Service activity coordinator, by phone on 07771 641113 or via email at mary.cufflin@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk.
For Leicester residents who cannot attend in person, the Royal Voluntary Service also provides an online alternative. Their Virtual Village Hall is a free digital hub offering live daily activities, including exercise, dance, yoga, crafts, and cookery sessions. No sign-in or subscription is needed; it can be found on Facebook or YouTube by searching for @VirtualVillageHall.
The Royal Voluntary Service is one of Britain's largest volunteering charities, providing support to the NHS, adult social care, and thousands of vulnerable people across the country.
