State Pensioners Born Before 1953 Can Receive £1,006 Extra from DWP

State pensioners born before 1953 are now eligible for an additional £1,006 from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), thanks to a significant increase in Pension Credit. Starting in April, the DWP is raising Pension Credit by 4.7 per cent, offering a major boost to help with the cost of living.

Details of the Pension Credit Increase

Qualifying state pensioners will receive up to £566 extra each year, which is combined with a £440 boost to the Basic state pension. The Basic rate is paid every four weeks to state pensioners born before 1953 for women and before 1951 for men. Together, these two increases total £1,006 annually.

The government estimates that approximately 880,000 pensioners are eligible for Pension Credit but have not yet claimed it, often due to the complex application process.

Eligibility for Guarantee Pension Credit

You may be eligible for Guarantee Pension Credit if you have reached State Pension age and reside in the UK, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man. Generally, this benefit requires a low income, but exceptions are made for carers, disabled individuals, or those with specific housing costs.

Income considered for Guarantee Pension Credit includes earnings, certain benefits like Carer’s Allowance, tax credits, State Pension, and private pensions. However, some income is disregarded, such as disability benefits, Child Benefit, and child maintenance.

Savings are allowed, but amounts over £10,000 will reduce the benefit received.

Additional Benefits of Claiming Pension Credit

Even a small amount of Pension Credit is worth claiming, as it opens access to other valuable benefits and concessions. These include:

  • Full payment of rent and Council Tax, depending on circumstances.
  • Free NHS dental treatment and sight tests.
  • DWP Winter Fuel Payments or the Pension Age Winter Heating payment in Scotland.
  • Assistance with the cost of glasses or contact lenses.
  • Help with travel costs to hospital for NHS treatment.
  • Cold Weather Payments when temperatures are 0°C or below for a week.
  • Money off electricity bills through the Warm Home Discount Scheme.
  • A free TV licence for those aged 75 or over.

This comprehensive support aims to alleviate financial pressures for elderly residents, ensuring they can manage rising living expenses more effectively.
