Winter Fuel Payment: £100 Extra for State Pensioners Born Before 1946
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced that state pensioners born before 1946 will receive an additional £100 payment as part of the Winter Fuel Payment scheme for the winter of 2026 to 2027. This financial support is designed to assist with heating bills during the colder months.
Eligibility and Payment Details
If you were born before 28 June 1960, you could be eligible for a payment ranging from £100 to £300. The exact amount depends on your birth date and personal circumstances during the qualifying week, which is set from 21 to 27 September 2026.
The DWP will send out letters in October or November 2026 to inform eligible individuals of their payment amount. If you do not receive a letter but believe you qualify, it is crucial to check whether you need to make a claim.
Payment Amounts Based on Birth Dates
The Winter Fuel Payment amounts vary significantly based on when you were born and your living situation:
- If you live alone or with no other eligible person: You will receive £200 if born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960, or £300 if born before 28 September 1946.
- If you do not receive certain benefits: Payments are structured as follows:
- £100 if both you and your housemate were born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960.
- £100 if you were born in that range but your housemate was born before 28 September 1946.
- £200 if you were born before 28 September 1946 and your housemate was born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960.
- £150 if both you and your housemate were born before 28 September 1946.
- For couples jointly claiming benefits: One partner will receive £200 if both were born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960, or £300 if one or both were born before 28 September 1946.
Opting Out and Income Considerations
If you wish to opt out of receiving the Winter Fuel Payment, you must complete an opt-out form by 11:59 pm on 20 September 2026 or call the helpline before 6 pm on 18 September 2026. It is important to note that if your total income exceeds £35,000 and you did not opt out, HMRC will reclaim the payment automatically; you cannot return it yourself.
This initiative aims to provide crucial financial relief to older adults during winter, ensuring they can manage heating costs effectively. Stay informed by checking official DWP communications to confirm your eligibility and payment details.
