Basic State Pensioners to Receive £740 Boost from DWP in June
Basic State Pensioners Get £740 Boost from DWP in June

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced a significant increase in the basic state pension, with eligible pensioners set to receive an additional £740 before the end of June. This boost follows a 4.8% uprating of the basic state pension, which applies to women born before 1953 and men born before 1951.

Understanding the Triple Lock System

The DWP employs the triple lock system to determine annual state pension increases. This mechanism considers the highest of three factors: the Consumer Price Index (CPI) measure of inflation from the previous September, average wage growth between May and July of the prior year, or a baseline of 2.5%.

New Payment Rates

For older pensioners receiving the basic state pension, the full weekly rate has risen from £176.45 to £184.90. This translates to an annual increase of £439.40, bringing the total yearly amount to £9,614.80, up from £9,175.40.

Those on the new state pension will see their full weekly rate increase from £230.25 to £241.30, a weekly rise of £11.05. This results in an extra £574.60 per year for those receiving the maximum amount.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the basic state pension, individuals must be men born before April 6, 1951, or women born before April 6, 1953. The amount received depends on National Insurance contributions.

  • Men born between 1945 and 1951 typically need 30 qualifying National Insurance years for the full amount.
  • Men born before 1945 require 44 qualifying years.
  • Women born between 1950 and 1953 need 30 qualifying years.
  • Women born before 1950 require 39 qualifying years.

Those with fewer qualifying National Insurance years will receive a reduced basic state pension, less than £184.90 per week in the 2026/27 tax year.

This increase provides a welcome financial boost for pensioners, helping to offset rising living costs and ensuring a more secure retirement for older citizens.
