A suspected 'big cat' has been spotted in Binley Woods and reported to Coventry police, reigniting interest in large feline sightings in the West Midlands.
Police Confirm Sighting Details
The Stoke and Wyken police team revealed that residents had passed on details of the unusual sighting in their latest nature update. This is not the first time reports of a 'large cat' have emerged in the area, with similar sightings recorded a decade ago.
"In response to the overwhelming interest from our community, we are thrilled to share additional stories about rare sightings," the local team said in their post.
Historical Context
The police explained that a similar report emerged in Warwickshire back in April 2016. Big cats were originally kept as pets before 1976, but following the Dangerous Wild Animals Act, many owners reportedly released them into the wild.
The team previously disclosed that an 'extremely rare' bird of prey – a lammergeier – had been spotted in Balsall Common.
Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any further sightings to local authorities.
