Birmingham, and more widely Britain, has been left divided in response to Sir Keir Starmer's decision to ban social media for under-16s, with thousands sharing their thoughts online.
Announcement Details
This morning (June 15), the Prime Minister announced that under-16s would no longer have access to platforms such as Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and X once legislation is enacted. The official ban is forecast to come into action next spring, and reactions have been mixed.
Reader Opinions
BirminghamLive readers have voiced a range of opinions. One reader, BYT, expressed skepticism: "It will just drive it underground, encourage kids to be more secretive, and they will find a way around it." Another, bookcrazy66, questioned enforcement: "How is that going to happen? The only way is ban phones off under-16s, that's a better plan. Also other platforms go on social media too."
In contrast, MaxPayne welcomed the move: "A welcome step. Labour, yet again, showing the forward thinking required to rebuild this country after years of Tory misrule."
Social Media Reactions
On TikTok, @psychobug03 commented: "I think this could be super healthy for young children. Social media is a minefield and opens doors for cyber bullying and harmful content. So I somewhat agree. I think texting only apps should be okay, e.g., WhatsApp, so children can still communicate with family, but things like TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook can be super harmful."
@castol469 went further, suggesting "apps should be removed from app stores permanently for all." However, @sculptedbysteph disagreed: "I agree social media is potentially harmful for teenagers... however, I think it's up to the parents to parent, not a government to dictate."
Further Comments
On BirminghamLive's TikTok page, @sparkyjk wrote: "It makes absolutely no difference. What you gonna do when you see a kid watching YouTube on an iPad? Nothing." @007summers6 added: "It really should be parents' choices. Glad I am already 19 yrs old." Meanwhile, @jawednawaz508 said: "I hope this happens. I am fed up with these kids using it."
