Birmingham Thief Jailed: Stolen Sunglasses Haul Awaits Owners

John Loughrey, a 54-year-old resident of Duddeston Manor Road, Birmingham, has been sentenced to six months in prison after being caught with a large haul of stolen sunglasses and attempting to steal a vehicle in the city centre. West Midlands Police are now trying to reunite the recovered sunglasses with their rightful owners.

Incident on Edmund Street

On June 24, at approximately 5:30 pm, Loughrey was seen loitering around vehicles on Edmund Street in Birmingham city centre. He opened the boot of a Nissan Qashqai, stealing a purse and sunglasses, which he placed in his rucksack. He then attempted to drive the Qashqai away but was disturbed by the victim and detained until officers arrived.

The victim’s stolen items were recovered, along with equipment commonly used for theft. Loughrey was charged with attempted theft of a vehicle, theft from a vehicle, and going equipped.

Search Reveals Dozens of Sunglasses

Following a search of Loughrey’s address, officers discovered a large number of sunglasses suspected to have been stolen during other offences in Birmingham. Police are appealing for anyone who recognises the sunglasses and can prove ownership to come forward.

To retrieve stolen items, individuals should call West Midlands Police on 101, quoting reference number 20/298451/26.

Court Sentence

Appearing at Birmingham Magistrates Court, Loughrey received a six-month prison sentence. The case highlights ongoing efforts by West Midlands Police to tackle theft and property crime in the city centre.
