Birmingham Leads UK in Poor Food Hygiene Ratings
Birmingham has been identified as the area with the highest percentage of restaurants failing basic food hygiene standards in the United Kingdom. According to data from Cairn Catering Engineers, 10.10% of all food premises in Birmingham received a hygiene rating of 2 or below, meaning they failed to achieve a basic pass. This places Birmingham at the top of the list for the worst-rated areas in the country.
The West Midlands region as a whole also tops the national rankings, with 8% of all food premises scoring 2 or lower. Within the region, Birmingham's performance is notably worse than its neighbours: Walsall (6.67%), Wolverhampton (5.15%), Sandwell (4.91%), Dudley (4.10%), Solihull (4.06%), and Coventry (2.16%).
Understanding Food Hygiene Ratings
UK food hygiene ratings are administered by the Food Standards Agency and local environmental health officers. Scores range from 0 to 5, reflecting how food is handled, the physical condition of the premises, and safety management. The scale is as follows: 5 – Very good; 4 – Good; 3 – Generally satisfactory; 2 – Improvement necessary; 1 – Major improvement necessary; 0 – Urgent improvement necessary.
Birmingham's high failure rate comes despite its reputation for a vibrant food scene, boasting more Michelin stars than anywhere in the UK outside London, alongside a thriving street food culture and numerous independent eateries.
Recent Case: Taste of Persia Shut Down
The findings follow a recent incident where a Middle Eastern restaurant in Birmingham was forced to close due to a severe cockroach infestation. Environmental Health officers from Birmingham City Council conducted a routine inspection of Taste of Persia on Hagley Road on June 30, 2025. They discovered pest control issues throughout the premises, including adult cockroaches (both dead and alive) and juvenile cockroaches found in the cooker, beneath the stove, under work tops, on pans, on shelves, and on the floor. Birmingham Magistrates Court heard the details, leading to the closure of the restaurant.
National Rankings: Counties Worst to Best
The data from Cairn Catering Engineers ranks counties and regions across the UK. The West Midlands tops the list as the worst, followed by Greater London, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Berkshire, Gwent, Powys, Lancashire, South Yorkshire, and Tyne & Wear rounding out the top ten. At the other end of the spectrum, the best-performing areas include Northumberland, Dorset, Rutland, Cumbria, East Sussex, Gloucestershire, Somerset, Gwynedd, Clwyd, and Herefordshire.
Birmingham's 10.10% failure rate is significantly higher than the national average and highlights ongoing challenges in food safety across the city.
