A former BBC radio presenter is confronting more than thirty criminal charges connected to alleged sexual offences that span an eighteen-year period, with accusations involving both children and adults.
Detailed Allegations Spanning Decades
Brian Shuttlewood, aged 79, has been charged with multiple counts including indecent assault, rape, gross indecency, and offences involving cruelty towards children. Notably, some of these alleged incidents are said to have occurred before his employment with the BBC commenced.
The charges relate to four individuals, all of whom are granted lifelong anonymity under legal provisions. The alleged offences are reported to have taken place in Leicester between 1972 and 1990.
Broadcasting Career and Personal Denials
Shuttlewood hosted programmes on BBC Radio Leicester from 1978 to 1995, becoming a recognisable voice across the East Midlands through shows on Radio Nottingham, Derby, and Lincoln as well. Known to audiences as "The Big Bopper," he specialised in 1950s and 1960s rock 'n' roll music with programmes like The Rocker Returns and The Brian Shuttlewood Music Programme.
He has entered not guilty pleas to all allegations, maintaining his innocence throughout the legal process. Among the charges is an accusation of possessing extreme pornographic images, which he also denies.
Legal Proceedings and Health Concerns
The former presenter's trial was originally scheduled to begin on Friday, January 6, but was postponed due to concerns about his health. A hearing has now been scheduled for February 17, when the court will receive an update on his medical condition.
Shuttlewood is currently on conditional bail while awaiting further court proceedings. The adjournment leaves the case unresolved as authorities determine whether he is medically fit to stand trial.
The allegations date back to 1972, six years before he began his BBC career in 1978, highlighting the historic nature of the claims now being examined through the legal system.
