West Bromwich Mother Receives Life Sentence for Murdering Infant Daughter
A mother from West Bromwich has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of her two-month-old daughter in a case that took nearly six years to reach its conclusion in court.
Zara Arsalan, also known as Sharandeep Talwandi, was convicted of killing her daughter Harleen 'Bambi' Bains at their family home on Caddick Crescent in July 2020. The tragic case came to light when the baby's father made an emergency 999 call, with Arsalan initially claiming the infant had fallen during a routine nappy change.
Horrific Medical Evidence Revealed
Medical examination revealed devastating injuries that contradicted Arsalan's initial account. A post-mortem examination showed Harleen had suffered:
- Multiple skull fractures
- Bleeding on the brain
- Fractured ribs
- A broken collar bone
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Poole stated that medical evidence indicated the child had likely been violently shaken and impacted against a hard surface, probably the floor. The investigation, known as Operation Crosstree, involved meticulous forensic work to uncover the truth.
Years of Deception and False Accusations
Throughout the investigation, Arsalan maintained a pattern of deception, even when presented with evidence that directly contradicted her claims. When finally arrested for murder in November 2022, she completely changed her story and attempted to blame her partner Jatinder Bains, who had died by suicide months earlier.
At Coventry Crown Court, Mr Justice Cavanagh KC noted that Arsalan had shown "no remorse" and had spent years "looking out for yourself and seeking to avoid being held responsible for her death." The jury unanimously convicted her of murder following a six-week trial.
Life Sentence with Minimum Term
On Thursday, March 12, Arsalan was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 19 years before being considered for parole. The case highlights the tragic consequences of child abuse and the extensive investigative work required to bring such cases to justice.
The court proceedings revealed a heartbreaking story of violence against a vulnerable infant, followed by years of deception as the mother attempted to evade responsibility for her actions. The sentencing brings some closure to a case that has spanned nearly six years since the infant's death.
