A 13-year-old girl described as having a "bright future ahead of her" has tragically died in a Yorkshire river. Palwasha Akbar was confirmed dead after being reported missing on Sunday, May 31, when she was pulled from the River Wharfe near Burnsall, North Yorkshire.

Family tribute

Her family has paid tribute to her and set up a Go Fund Me appeal in her memory, reports YorkshireLive. They described Palwasha as a "bright, kind, and caring 13-year-old girl whose tragic passing has left her family, friends, school, and community heartbroken."

"Palwasha loved reading, spending time with her friends, and bringing happiness to those around her. She was a hardworking student with a warm smile, a gentle nature, and a caring heart. She had a bright future ahead of her and touched the lives of so many people through her kindness and positivity," the family said.

In memory of Palwasha, they are raising funds to support charitable causes that reflect her values of kindness, compassion, and helping others. "Through this fundraiser, we hope to create something positive and lasting in her name, ensuring that her memory continues to make a difference in the lives of others," they added.

School remembers student

Palwasha was reportedly a pupil at Bronte Girls' Secondary Academy. In an earlier tribute, the school described her as a valued and much-loved student who would be remembered for her "compassion and willingness to go above and beyond to help others."

The family thanked donors for helping honour Palwasha's life. "Thank you for helping us remember a beautiful young girl who was taken far too soon but will never be forgotten," they said.

Inquest to open

An inquest into Palwasha's death is expected to open at Northallerton coroner's court on June 18.
