Households across the UK have been issued a warning about the use of £20 banknotes following a series of counterfeit scams in the Midlands.
Police Alert After Counterfeit Notes Used in Laptop Purchases
Staffordshire Police has urged members of the public to exercise caution when accepting £20 notes from potential buyers, particularly in private sales. The warning comes after two separate incidents where counterfeit notes were used to purchase an Apple MacBook.
According to the force, the suspect arrived and left in a car on both occasions. The incidents took place in the areas of Cotes Heath and Derrington, near Stafford.
Investigation Underway
Staffordshire Police has confirmed that an investigation has been launched, with enquiries ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Residents are advised to check banknotes carefully for security features, such as the hologram, raised print, and the see-through window. If you suspect a note is counterfeit, do not accept it and report it to the police immediately.
This warning follows a broader trend of counterfeit currency scams targeting online marketplace transactions. Police recommend using secure payment methods and meeting in public places when buying or selling high-value items.
