John Sykes Foundation Grant Supports New Bereavement Befriending Pilot in Reading
Grant for Bereavement Befriending Pilot in Reading

The John Sykes Foundation has announced its latest grant award to Daisy's Dream, funding a new pilot project in Reading. Daisy's Dream offers vital bereavement support to children and families through tailored sessions based on individual needs. Last year, the charity received 323 new referrals, with 75 from the Reading area, representing nearly a quarter of all referrals and the highest number across Berkshire.

Growing Demand for Support

Families typically receive support from trained practitioners over an average of six sessions. However, many require ongoing emotional and practical help beyond this period. To meet this demand, Daisy's Dream is launching a befriending volunteer programme, where trained volunteers provide companionship and a listening ear to help families adjust after a loss.

Grant Details

A grant of £3,240 from the John Sykes Foundation will fund the development and delivery of this pilot for one year. The funding will train six volunteers, each supporting up to four families over nine months. Each family will receive a bespoke support plan, with volunteers receiving ongoing supervision from professional staff.

John Sykes commented: "Daisy's Dream does incredible work supporting children and families through difficult times. We are proud to support this innovative volunteer programme, which will make a meaningful difference to families needing continued care."

The pilot will focus on families in Reading first to ensure a positive local impact. The charity hopes to expand the programme as more volunteers are recruited. For grant applications, visit www.johnsykesfoundation.org.
