Scouts in Derbyshire Launch Volunteer Drive to Meet Rising Youth Demand
The Scouts organization in Derbyshire is urgently seeking volunteers to act as role models and support young people through a diverse range of activities. With over 250 options available, including air activities, cooking, emergency aid, and water sports, the program has seen a surge in interest from children and teenagers, leading to a critical need for more adult helpers to accommodate the growing number of participants.
Volunteer Opportunities Across All Age Groups
Charlotte, a lead volunteer for a local group, emphasized the wide appeal of the activities offered. "We provide a broad spectrum of experiences that children and young people truly enjoy," she said. The organization is looking for volunteers to assist with various sections: Squirrels for ages 4 to 6, Beavers for ages 6 to 8, Cubs for ages 8 to 10, Scouts for ages 10 to 14, and Explorers for ages 14 to 17.
She added that there are also background roles available, such as in fundraising, trusteeship, administration, IT support, or general assistance when needed. This flexibility allows individuals to contribute in ways that suit their skills and availability.
Benefits for Volunteers and Young People Alike
Volunteer Nargis highlighted the mutual benefits of involvement. "Volunteering with Scouts is a fantastic chance to help young people learn and develop skills while having fun and trying new things," she noted. "It's also an excellent opportunity for volunteers to learn new skills themselves, make friends, and take pride in watching young people grow."
Matthew, another volunteer, explained the foundational role volunteers play. "We help set the groundwork and then encourage children to build upon it as they explore new activities and gain life skills," he said. "Young people crave adventure, and we provide the platform for those experiences."
He further described the rewarding aspects of volunteering: "Working with any section allows you to witness positive changes in young people's characters, such as increased confidence and social engagement. As role models, we can impart values, offer challenges, and facilitate face-to-face interactions that help children learn and grow."
Skill Development for Future Success
Participation in Scouts helps young people develop essential skills like communication, independence, leadership, problem-solving, social abilities, and teamwork. These competencies are invaluable for future applications to apprenticeships, colleges, employment, and universities, providing a strong foundation for their personal and professional lives.
The call for volunteers underscores the organization's commitment to expanding its impact in the community, ensuring that more young people in Derbyshire can access these enriching opportunities.
