The national first aid charity, St John Ambulance, has issued a rallying call for compassionate individuals across the East Riding of Yorkshire and South Humber region to join its ranks of lifesaving volunteers. Following a successful summer campaign in Hull, the charity is now expanding its winter recruitment drive to cover North and North East Lincolnshire, seeking people eager to give back to their local communities.
Two Vital Roles: From Frontline Care to Community Support
The charity is actively recruiting for two distinct positions, offering flexible and rewarding ways to contribute. The first role is that of an Emergency Responder, where no prior medical experience is required. Successful applicants will receive full, cost-free training and a uniform. These volunteers commit to a minimum of 100 hours per year – roughly one day a month – providing essential first aid and emergency care at a wide variety of local events.
These events include fixtures at Beverley Races, Scunthorpe Speedway, Barton Bike Night, MKM Stadium, and Craven Park, as well as major council-organised gatherings like Hull Fair. Volunteers become part of a friendly, dedicated team, delivering critical support where it's needed most.
The second opportunity is for Community Volunteers, ideal for those who wish to support St John's mission from a different angle. This role focuses on fundraising, marketing, community engagement projects, or joining the Fellowship Group. Tasks can range from running cake stalls and tombolas to providing refreshments for frontline crews, all within a sociable and supportive environment.
Learn More at Upcoming Recruitment Events
To help potential volunteers understand the scope of the work, St John Ambulance plans to host local recruitment events in the area, with specific dates and venues to be confirmed shortly. These gatherings will offer a chance to meet current team members, learn about the local events they cover, and get detailed information on the training process.
Jacky Bowes, County Commissioner for St John Ambulance, emphasised the profound impact of volunteering. "Volunteering with St John Ambulance is more than just giving your time, it's about being there for your community in the moments that matter most," she said. "Every shift is a chance to make a real difference. We're looking for people from all walks of life who want to learn new skills, meet new people, and be part of something truly meaningful."
Your Community Needs You: How to Apply
All volunteer roles are now live on the national St John Ambulance website. For those interested in frontline duties, separate applications are available for the East Riding and South Humber areas. Similarly, Community Volunteer vacancies are listed for both regions. As patient and volunteer safety is paramount, all applicants will be required to complete a DBS check.
This new year presents a fresh opportunity to gain invaluable skills and provide an essential service to your local area. Whether on the frontline at a racecourse or supporting behind the scenes, St John Ambulance offers a uniquely fulfilling way to contribute.
