Greater Anglia Calls for Community Volunteers to Adopt Local Stations
Greater Anglia is actively seeking volunteers to join its Station Adoption programme, aiming to drive improvements at multiple stations across its network. The initiative currently has vacancies at Brimsdown, Enfield Lock, Harling Road, Hythe, Kelvedon, Marks Tey, Meridian Water, Ponders End, Stansted Airport, Stansted Mountfitchet, and Waltham Cross stations.
What Is the Station Adoption Programme?
The Station Adoption programme enables individuals or organisations to adopt their local railway station and contribute to its presentation and welfare for the benefit of the local community. Originally created to improve communication between train operators and station users, the scheme has evolved significantly in East Anglia.
Alan Neville, Greater Anglia's customer and community engagement manager, who oversees the initiative, emphasised its impact: "It makes such a positive difference when the community is actively involved in their local station. Station adoption creates mutually beneficial relationships and dialogue to help us understand what improvements are important to local people, and promotes civic pride and wellbeing by bringing people together and enhancing public spaces."
Expanding Roles and Benefits
Over the years, the programme has grown beyond its initial scope. Station adopters now play an active role in:
- Keeping stations looking good through gardening projects and planters.
- Supporting local wildlife and biodiversity efforts.
- Delivering creative community art projects.
- Participating in station 'health checks'.
- Promoting the railway locally and acting as 'the eyes and ears' of their station.
Greater Anglia provides funding to cover costs for small projects, tools, and materials, helping to improve the station environment. Stations really benefit from the additional focus and care that the scheme provides, making them more welcoming and attractive with input from local people.
How to Get Involved
Station adopters can be individuals, groups, or organisations. Anyone interested in adopting their station should email StationAdopters@GreaterAnglia.co.uk. For more details, visit the Greater Anglia website.
Currently, Greater Anglia boasts more than 330 adopters at over 125 stations across Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Hertfordshire, and Cambridgeshire, showcasing the programme's success in fostering community engagement and enhancing public spaces.
