Major Funding Boost for Teesside Youth Music Programme
A significant investment of £100,000 has been awarded to Middlesbrough's pioneering music engagement programme, Musinc, to continue its vital work with young people facing barriers to musical participation. The substantial grant comes from Youth Music through their Catalyser Fund and will support the organisation's activities from 2026 to 2028.
Creating Inclusive Musical Opportunities
Based at Middlesbrough Town Hall, Musinc provides musical opportunities for people of all ages, backgrounds and circumstances. The programme focuses on two key priorities: delivering long-term music making for disabled, d/Deaf and neurodivergent young people, and establishing strong progression pathways for all young musicians.
Musinc manager Samantha Knight expressed her delight at the continued support: "We're delighted that Youth Music have committed to supporting Musinc for the next two years. As an organisation that has received multiple grants from Youth Music, it really shows the value they see in our work and the difference we're making for young people in Middlesbrough."
Flagship Projects and Regional Impact
The funding will support several innovative projects including:
- Middlesbrough Open Orchestra - receiving regional and national recognition for live performances
- Bandjam - providing opportunities for young people to learn, rehearse and perform in bands
- Young Producers - activities co-designed with participants to programme local live events
Notably, Musinc is one of only four projects in the North East to receive this round of Catalyser funding, highlighting its significant regional importance.
The grant will also enable Musinc to further diversify its workforce by recruiting emerging music leaders and developing their skills to become specialist facilitators working with disabled, d/Deaf and neurodivergent young people.
Councillor Philippa Storey, Middlesbrough's deputy mayor and executive member for education and culture, commented: "This is fantastic news for a brilliant project that really does change lives. Music is a powerful force for good that helps young people from every possible background express themselves, find new outlets for their creativity and develop new and lasting friendships."
Musinc operates with backing from Youth Music, thanks to funding from the National Lottery via Arts Council England, ensuring that young people across Middlesbrough can continue to access transformative musical experiences regardless of their circumstances.
