Teen Sea Cadet Leads Cross-Country Cycle to London for Charity
Teen Sea Cadet Cycles for Charity from Accrington to London

An ambitious teenager from Lancashire is taking his role as a national ambassador to new heights. Hadley, a 16-year-old First Sea Lord's Cadet, is set to lead a dedicated team on a grueling cross-country cycle from his home unit in Accrington all the way to the Sea Cadet National Headquarters in London this Saturday, March 28.

Inspiring Leadership and a Clear Mission

Appointed by the Royal Navy's First Sea Lord, General Sir Gwyn Jenkins, Hadley serves as a high-level representative for the North West and the UK. His mission is to spread the word that the Sea Cadets offer life-changing opportunities, skills, and friendships in a safe, positive space accessible to all young people.

The Coast-To-Capital Challenge

The "AO's Massive Ride" is not just a personal milestone; it is a major fundraising and awareness campaign. Hadley will be joined in the saddle by fellow Leading Cadet Felix Scully-Crane from Ashby-de-la-Zouch. The support team is equally impressive, featuring Commander Charles Baggett-Jewitt RN, civilian instructor Nick Crane, warrant officer 2 Alan Gillespie-Antal, and support driver Sub-Lieutenant Nicki Scully-Crane RNR.

The route will take the team from Accrington through Tameside, Sheffield, and Nottingham, before continuing south through Northampton and Luton to reach the finish line in London. The team's primary goal is to raise vital funds via JustGiving to ensure that cadet experiences remain heavily subsidized or even fully funded for all participants.

Bringing the Journey to Life

To enhance the campaign's impact, the team is utilizing drone operators and a live tracker, with constant updates being shared on the National Sea Cadets Instagram and Facebook pages. This allows supporters to follow the journey in real-time and engage with the cause.

Removing Barriers to Success

For Hadley, who is home-educated through an online school, the Sea Cadets have been fundamental in preparing him for the future. He is passionate about ensuring these opportunities are not just for a "select few."

"The cadet forces remove financial barriers," Hadley explained. "We want to reach young people and enhance their confidence, mental health, and self-discipline, giving them 'something to do' other than gaming or roaming the streets."

A World of Opportunity

The Sea Cadets offer an incredible range of experiences and nationally recognized qualifications, including:

  • On the water: Offshore weeks on yachts and Tall Ships, powerboating, rowing, windsurfing, and paddle boarding.
  • The Great Outdoors: Mountain biking, Duke of Edinburgh (DofE), bush craft, and week-long summer camps.
  • Technical skills: Marine engineering, aviation, Comms and Information Systems, and BTEC vocational qualifications.
  • Leadership: First Aid, peer education, presentation skills, and physical training.

Join the Send-Off

Accrington is preparing for a grand departure on Saturday, March 28. The local community, families, youth organizations, and dignitaries are invited to the start line at the Accrington Sea Cadet unit for a send-off filled with flags, cheering, and an official start.

"I really want the chance to inspire anyone who would thrive in Sea Cadets," said Hadley. "Getting the message out is just as important as the fundraising."

The Accrington and District Sea Cadets unit is located at Harvey Street, Oswaldtwistle, BB5 3LT. To support this cause, donations can be made through the official JustGiving page, and more information on the Sea Cadets is available on their website.
