Essex Radio Station Enhances Youth Support with Dedicated Youth Worker Role

Gateway Community Media, a radio station based in Basildon, Essex, is now offering enhanced support to young people through the introduction of a trained youth worker. This initiative aims to address the growing number of youths seeking media experience and guidance at the station.

Expanding Opportunities for Young Media Enthusiasts

The station, which broadcasts on DAB as Gateway 97.8, provides work experience and content production opportunities for young individuals interested in the media industry. Additionally, it runs a youth group called Radio Club, catering to those aged 11 to 18. With a significant increase in participation over the past year, the station has recognized the need for additional support to help young people navigate personal challenges.

Funding Boost from Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner

The Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex (PFCC), Roger Hirst MBE, has awarded a £15,000 crime and disorder reduction grant from the 2026 Community Safety Development Fund to Gateway Community Media. This funding is specifically allocated to train a team member as a youth worker, enabling the station to offer comprehensive guidance and support.

Roger Hirst MBE commented, "Hobbies are such a positive way for young people to spend their spare time. In today's digital age, activities that inspire ambition and skill-building are invaluable. By adding a youth worker, Gateway Community Media can provide crucial support during challenging periods in young lives, turning teachable moments into opportunities for growth."

Addressing Diverse Youth Needs

Danny Lawrence, executive director of Gateway Community Media, highlighted the station's role as a springboard for aspiring media professionals. He noted that approximately 80% of the young participants face various difficulties, such as being young carers, having special educational needs, or being at risk of getting into trouble.

Danny Lawrence explained, "We have seen a surge in young people wanting to get involved, many from schools and colleges seeking work placements. This funding allows us to have a youth worker on hand, ensuring we can cater to all youths, not just by offering media facilities but by providing essential care and support. It opens doors for more young people to discover their passions and transform their lives."

He shared an example of a boy with poor school attendance who developed an interest in Elvis through the program, leading to a positive experience reviewing a tribute act at the Towngate Theatre for the radio station.

Skills Development and Future Impact

Young participants at the station learn practical media skills, including microphone use, interviewing techniques, and editing radio packages. The addition of a youth worker is expected to further enhance their personal development and behavioral changes.

Regarding the PFCC funding, Danny Lawrence expressed enthusiasm, stating, "It is absolutely fantastic. Without this money, we couldn't expand our efforts. In a competitive funding landscape, being able to help more people is truly wonderful."

This initiative underscores Gateway Community Media's commitment to fostering talent and providing a supportive environment for young people in Essex, helping them build skills and confidence for future success.
