Chesterfield Aims for UK Town of Culture 2028 with Joint Bid
Chesterfield Borough Council has officially announced a collaborative bid with the independent Chesterfield Town Board to enter the first-ever UK Town of Culture competition. This national initiative, spearheaded by the UK Government, is designed to spotlight towns across the country, with Chesterfield seeking to highlight its rich heritage, creative talent, and burgeoning cultural scene.
Competition Details and Prize Structure
The competition will see towns vying for the opportunity to deliver a major six-month cultural programme in 2028. The winning location will be awarded a substantial £3 million to fund its initiatives. Additionally, two finalists in each category will receive £250,000 to support key elements of their proposals, ensuring broader participation and recognition.
Focus on Chesterfield's Unique Identity
Chesterfield's bid will concentrate on the town's distinctive identity, which blends its historic market-town roots, industrial heritage, and vibrant modern creative community. This approach aims to showcase how tradition and innovation coexist, creating a dynamic cultural landscape. The bid builds on recent investments across the borough, including market regeneration, the refurbishment of Stephenson Memorial Hall, and the Animate Public Art Programme, all of which contribute to a strengthened cultural infrastructure.
Community Involvement and Leadership Support
If the bid progresses to the next stage, residents, community groups, and local organisations will be invited to help shape the vision by sharing ideas, stories, and ambitions that reflect Chesterfield's character and future. This inclusive process ensures the programme resonates with the local populace.
Councillor Tricia Gilby, leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, emphasized the bid's significance, stating it is an opportunity to 'shine a national spotlight on everything that makes Chesterfield special' while creating a lasting legacy for residents, businesses, and visitors.
Emily Bowman, from Junction Arts and a member of the Chesterfield Pride in Place Town Board, added that the competition offers a chance to bring people together, support local creativity, and showcase the town's ambition on a national stage.
Broader Goals and Future Updates
The bid aims to leverage culture to boost wellbeing, economic growth, and community pride, aligning with broader societal benefits. Further updates on the bid's progress will be shared via the council's website and social media channels, keeping the community informed and engaged throughout the process.
