The UK's first hospice-dedicated concert band has been established at Saint Francis Hospice, blending community music-making with fundraising for end-of-life care. Founded by bandleader Paul Binder, the Saint Francis Hospice Concert Band brings together local musicians, hospice staff, and volunteers in what is believed to be a pioneering initiative nationwide.
Rapid Growth and Debut Concert
Since launching earlier this year, the ensemble has expanded to around 50 members, featuring a mix of professional musicians, healthcare workers, and community members. The band performs as a full symphonic wind band, with instruments spanning woodwind, brass, and percussion.
The debut summer concert is scheduled for Sunday, July 19, from 4.30pm to 7pm at Corpus Christi Church in Collier Row. Tickets are available via Eventbrite.
Founder's Vision
Paul Binder, the band's founder, said: "When I discovered that there isn’t a hospice in the UK with its own concert band, I thought, why shouldn’t Saint Francis Hospice be the first?" He added: "The band is my way of bringing the hospice and the community together. It’s made up of staff, volunteers and local musicians, all working as a team to promote the hospice in a fun and engaging way, while also helping to raise much-needed funds."
Concert Programme
Under the theme 'Celebrating the World of Stage and Screen', the programme includes pop, swing, sacred music, film scores, and West End favourites. Highlights feature music inspired by David Bowie and Ozzy Osbourne, alongside Disney classics and musical theatre numbers.
Community Impact
Reflecting on the band's journey, Binder noted: "The response has honestly been incredible. Many people told me they wouldn’t have joined a band at all if it wasn’t for this cause. Seeing people return to music after decades away is something quite special." The concert will raise funds for Saint Francis Hospice, which relies heavily on community support for its care services.
Future Plans
Organisers plan to expand performances, including a second concert in Brentwood later this year, with ambitions to establish a regular programme of events and collaborations. The band serves areas including Havering, Barking and Dagenham, Redbridge, and Brentwood.
