Theatre Royal Wakefield is opening its doors for free on September 13, allowing the public to explore its heritage and view future plans. The historic venue, built more than 130 years ago by renowned architect Frank Matcham, will host behind-the-scenes tours, family activities, and archival displays.
Free Entry and Behind-the-Scenes Tours
General admission to the heritage day is completely free, but advance booking is required for the popular guided tours. These tours give visitors access to areas usually closed to the public, including the main stage itself.
Guests can also explore exclusive archival collections in the studio space and inspect visualisations of planned building improvements.
Family Activities and Prizes
Younger visitors can take part in theatre set design competitions and a detective trail with exclusive prizes up for grabs. The event also offers a chance for local residents to share memories of the venue while viewing proposed designs for its future.
Community and Heritage Celebration
Sarah Shooter, director of patron experience, said: "Heritage Open Day is a wonderful opportunity for people to discover more about the history of Theatre Royal Wakefield and the role it has played in our community."
She continued: "We're proud of our heritage, but we're equally excited about our plans to preserve this remarkable building for future generations."
She added: "We look forward to welcoming visitors through our doors to explore, reflect and share their own memories of the theatre."
