Long-standing Coronation Street actor Alan Halsall has committed to another year on the cobbles, signing a fresh contract to continue playing the iconic mechanic Tyrone Dobbs.
A Cobbles Stalwart's Journey
The 43-year-old star, who first joined the ITV soap as a 15-year-old in 1998, is now poised to embark on his 28th year in Weatherfield. A source close to the show told The Sun: "Alan was thrilled to sign his contract earlier this year. He's made Tyrone into a cobbles classic so bosses are delighted he's agreed to stay for at least another year."
They added that there are "big things coming up" for both the soap and Tyrone in the next twelve months, sparking anticipation among the show's loyal fanbase.
From Duckworth Protege to Street Favourite
Tyrone Dobbs arrived on the famous street with his adoptive mother, Jackie, quickly embedding himself into the community's heart. He became a surrogate son to legendary couple Jack and Vera Duckworth, played by the late Bill Tarmey and Liz Dawn.
Over nearly three decades, the character has been at the centre of some of Corrie's most memorable and explosive plots. These include:
- The shocking 50th-anniversary affair between his first wife, Molly Dobbs, and his garage business partner, Kevin Webster.
- The emotional discovery of his birth mother, drug addict Cassie Plummer, and his subsequent bond with his grandmother, Evelyn, portrayed by Dame Maureen Lipman.
Overcoming Adversity and Looking Ahead
In a recent dramatic storyline, Tyrone was the victim of a devastating hit-and-run, orchestrated as part of Carl Webster's car theft ring. The shocking stunt, kept secret from viewers, left many fearing for the character's future on the show.
The accident resulted in Tyrone being confined to a wheelchair, with his wife, Fiz Stape, played by Jennie McAlpine, juggling his care with raising their daughters, Hope and Ruby. Speaking to Metro about the plot, Halsall revealed: "Initially, there is a concern that he might not get up at all... They don't know if he'll walk again or how life is going to look going forward."
With his new deal confirmed, fans can rest assured that Tyrone will remain a fixture on the street. Halsall's hint at "big things" on the horizon promises more gripping drama and classic Weatherfield twists for one of its most enduring characters.
