A new BBC crime drama with a retro feel has released a first glimpse, and its lineup features a legendary actor and a beloved Coronation Street favourite. Known as The Hairdresser Mysteries, the six-part BBC series has been described as a "nostalgic nod to the 70s" and centres on hairdresser Lily Petal, portrayed by Sally Phillips, who relocates from the city to a quiet village after purchasing a hair salon.
A synopsis reads: "Everyone tells their hairdresser everything and soon she is at the hub of her new village's secrets and revelations, and with her own brand of uncannily highly developed, hairdressing intuitive empathy and understanding, solves the village mysteries." The show, which was filmed in the West Midlands, was crafted by celebrated playwright and screenwriter Jim Cartwright, whose son James recently featured on Coronation Street as the villainous Theo Cartwright.
A first look image has been released showing Sally Phillips and Charlotte Jordan posing as their respective characters inside the hairdressing salon. Alongside Sally Phillips, The Hairdresser Mysteries also stars Ben Castle-Gibb and former Coronation Street actress Charlotte Jordan, who portrayed Daisy Midgeley on the ITV soap.
While a release date is yet to be announced, enthusiastic fans took to social media to voice their excitement. One user wrote: "INCREDIBLE NEWS." Another commented: "I'm so excited." A third posted: "Omg sally phillips too." Sally boasts a career spanning more than three decades and is most recognised for portraying journalist Shazzer in the Bridget Jones film franchise. She has also featured in I'm Alan Partridge, Miranda, and Jam and Jerusalem.
Meanwhile, Charlotte rose to prominence playing barmaid Daisy Midgeley on Coronation Street, making her first appearance in 2020. As the stepdaughter of Jenny Connor (Sally Ann Matthews), Daisy swiftly became a firm favourite amongst viewers. Throughout the years, Daisy featured in numerous major storylines, from a distressing acid attack plot to unexpected affairs, before departing in 2025.
Discussing her Corrie departure, Charlotte previously said: "I'm feeling really grateful for my years on the show and the people I've gotten to work with. Kate [Brooks] has been so supportive about me wanting to go back out into the audition circuit and very generous with Daisy's exit story, as she really wanted to do the character justice. And I can't tell you how much fun the other cast members and I had playing out this last hurrah."
The Hairdresser Mysteries is expected to air later this year.
